Review Time! Gotham Knight
It fucking rocked.
Since it is in fact several different stories each unique in their own way I'll split them up for the sake of reviewing.
Have I Got A Story For You
Definately a good note to start on with an 'evalution' of sorts on Bats by three Gotham youths each telling a story of their encounter with the Dark Knight. The first sees him as a shadow creature lurking and striking. The second sees him as a giant bat beast swooping down from the sky. The third sees a robotic being acting as the ultimate enforcer of justice. Each is brilliantly done and in a style that words alone can't convey the grandour of it. Though the ending is the best as the fourth youth, who'd 'missed all the fun' of seeing Batman in action comes face to face with Bats, aiding the avenger in taking out the faceless bad guy. You can't help but smile at Bat's 'I owe you one' to the kid as he picks up the theif and disappears into the smoke of the room. Definately a good knod to how Batman, despite all his spooky scare tactics, can still be good for kids. He's a hero and the look of pure shock and awe on the kid's face was priceless.
Crossfire
Crispus Allen doesn't like Batman. His partner on the otherhand, born and raised Gothamite, Anna Ramirez tries to convince him of the good he does. 'Gotham is changing' and regardless of being a vigillante Batman is the cause of that. Definately a Rucka piece at heart. In visuals I loved the look of the prison and how imposing and full of insanity it all appears. The inmates glaring and grinning from the shadows as they drive up is both sinister and full of that 'Arkham charm' you can only get from Batman comics. Though that's hardly the best part.
Later, after the two MCU detectives find themself caught between the Russians and Italians and Batman swoops in to save Allen, is definately the highlight. The flames gushing upward, Batman pummeling the Russians(the Italians already down), and then the standoff with Marconi. At first I thought he'd pull a batarang move or something yet the full on rush, didn't see that coming. Stunning.
((sidenote: Though I was confused as to why they used a different character than Renee Montoya as Crispus's partner, according to a panel at WW Chicago Rucka said there's a reason for this that comes up in The Dark Knight. Guess I'll wait and see. *hopes it's nothing too horrible*))
Field Test
This one started out a little weak for me. The animation style really wasn't selling me on Bruce to the point that, Kevin Conry voice or no, it took me a moment to realise who the hell that was. You could also see the fallbacks of a device that refracts bullets from a mile away, throw in Batman/Bruce using such a device to play some childish prank on someone and it doesn't come across very well. While it gets points for having him dismiss the device on the grounds of 'I'm willing to risk my own life' (yet not the lives of others) it does nothing for me as a whole. Semi-decent ending though if they were to cut one my vote would be this one.
In Darkness Dwells
I'll come back to this one... I have to watch it again.
Working Through Pain
Ditto.
Deadshot
Ditto x2.
