2012 Read List

Felt like trying to keep track of the books I read this year, granted it's already a little fuzzy since I'm not exactly sure where some cut off between last year and this year(trimmed out anything there's even a chance I actually started in December though, just to be sure).

Recommendations always welcome! I like zombies, dystopian/post-apocalyptic worlds, lesbian fluff, female main characters, not ignoring the existence of POC/queer folks/ect., horror, monsters of all sorts, mythology and some urban fantasy, queer reimagings, and 1950s-style parody/noir.

Point A to Point B

My car's inspection was rejected and it'd take at least 1k to fix and even then was sure to break down again, so I decided to scrap it. Was my first car, so kinda woe over it being gone. RIP Domi. Fyi, its name was Dominique, as in Demona from Gargoyle's human name, lol. Was a '97 Pontiac Sunfire. Got it in 2006, came with 140k miles already on it and a CD player that never worked, but *sigh*

Now to begin the unpleasant task of figuring out my transportation situation. I mean, I bike to work and there's several strip malls in a 3-4 mile radius of my house, so it's not exactly like I'm completely stuck. Yet, anything outside that radius(movie theaters, library, clubs, most people I know's homes, clothing stores I actually like, grocery store that actually carries a lot of what I need, and so on...) is at least 12 miles away. Not the worst distance, but still... this area doesn't lend itself well to the vehicleless. Never mind that I'm supposed to visit my sister, a five hour drive, this weekend.

That said, cars are fucking expensive and I'm really not looking forward to draining my moving funds on this. Blah.

(no subject)

It was an okay birthday.

Woke up, light 3 mile run, hour full-body massage(pre-paid for, so I just had to enjoy it), library for awhile, and dinner at my current favorite restaurant(note to self: don't eat the pepper that comes with the chana masala just because B did). Not much in gifts, getting older and all that, but those I did get were of the giftcard variety, which I like, my hobbies and interests tend to make it hard for me to tell someone who isn't into the same thing what I want and not worry about them overpaying or having to really hunt for it due to lack of knowledge.

For the rest of the day, zombie books and tea bath(and probably some drawing and cleaning). Was going to go dancing, but the weekend is way better so... later.

Hope everyone else who had a birthday today, know a few, had a fantastic day and that everyone else's was pretty swell too. ;p

Rims

For the holidays, I got my little brother these new rims for his car. Only, they didn't arrive in time. So, I improvised...

...with ten minutes, cardboard, paint(and brush), and an x-acto knife. The sheer look of absolute confusion on his face upon opening it, prior to an explanation, was well worth accidentally stabbing myself in the process.

Rain, rain...

Haven't posted here much anymore, might try to rectify that.

Lately I've just been... lots of ups and downs and nothing in particular. Have a million little projects I'm working on that make me feel productive yet at the same time I feel stuck and like I need something to happen. Yeah, vague paragraph is vague.

Mostly just distracting myself from the storm going on and being trapped inside right now so, some of which Tumblr folk have already have seen, ( a few drawings. )

DADT and the Holidays

Dinner with parents tonight was a bad idea. I mean, I came for the food as I'm always good for good food, but two young white straight cis military guys, cousin and friend, talking about how 'gay (enlisted) people might use the fact that they're gay to get out of doing stuff by "claiming" to be harassed' and how 'everyone gets bullied, you just have to deal with it(same topic)' kinda put me on edge.*

But, I didn't know my cousin's friend aside from this meeting and I'm not too close to that particular cousin. Either way, I gave my input on the matter and it eventually got derailed/dropped by inquiries of what 'ginger' means in regards to people. Whatever.

Except, my mother just decided to 'have a talk' with me about how I was very rude and shouldn't have 'gone off', something that no one else seemed to feel was what I did, on my cousin's friend about it and how I made him uncomfortable. Then she topped it off with a 'you might(lol, love that in there) be gay, but even if(again!) you are that, it doesn't give you the right to be rude to people about it!'

* Only small plus was my father taking my side in his passive way

Weekend in Beijing

While none of the family live(d) in Beijing, it turned out that my aunt had a friend who lived up there with her son and a spare room, so one weekend my cousin and I went ahead and bought two tickets on the over-night train to Beijing(a first for her as well!). Being cheap we got ones that meant we had to share a car with other people, we had the top bunks and some old folk had the bottom ones, though all in all it wasn't a bad trip.

That said... roughly two days in Beijing.

While my initial flight landed in Hong Kong, I didn't really have time to take much in outside of the MTR, so on the last day before I caught a flight to Shanghai I woke up early and took the fast train(direct from GZ) to Hong Kong for the day.

The City of Guangzhou: Part II

Now with ~100% less "city".

Every Saturday my cousin and I, and on some occasions just me, would take the bus into the city and head over to the Golden Mango. There we'd pay 50 kuai to board a bus with a bunch of other folks and to head out to the countryside for a hash run. These pictures are from those Saturdays.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFF.... I accidentally deleted this post. Reposting.

Sorry for the lapse in posts, it being over a month since my last. Been busy(got a job, modeled for a life drawing group, started running more, drawing lots, overdosing on Asian programing, and so on). For the next photo post, I figured I'd focus on the place I spent, roughly, the most time, the city of Guangzhou.

A day in Phnom Penh

I've determined that the next time I will sleep will be on a plane crossing the Pacific. In that regard, one of what will be many photo posts.

At first I considered putting them in order, but that would be much too logical. Instead, I'm starting with the most depressing stop, Phnom Penh. If you know anything about Cambodian history you might understand where this is going and why, especially after a week in the blissful haze of Ko Samet, it was a rather sobering trip. Even if you are unfamiliar with it, don't worry, I'll provide a brief run down.

I found religion!

It was hiding in Hong Kong.

Until yesterday it didn't really sink in for me just how unreligious mainland China is(for good reason, the government has issues with it). Yet, I spent yesterday in Hong Kong which, while being in China, is governed by a different set of rules, and found that it just seemed to keep popping up.

For example, I kept getting slightly turned around in this one area by Central and my 'oh shit, I've come this way already' point ended up being this big church which had this one priest(?) chilling by the main door who seemed amused whenever he saw me. This worked fine until I ran into another church that I assumed was the same one, despite lack of smirking man, making me lost. Oy. Never would have happened in Guangzhou since there's just the one church over on Shamian Island.

Any who, later on, while taking the metro, I was chatted up for a few stops and handed literature by a Jehovah's Witness, a French-Hong Kongese one at that! He seemed proud to tell me the number of Jehovah's Witness' in the US once he learned where I was from. Then, for noteworthy run-in number three, I was helped in getting to Shenzhen, after missing my train from Kowloon->Guangzhou straight through, by a pastor who lives there. He seemed an okay guy and had an impressive collection of stamps/pages in his passport from going through immigration nearly everyday to get to/from HK. Could have done without his 'You need to accept Jesus into your life to be happy' lines, though I figured it came with the territory for someone who moved to China "for God" and had "Jesus loves you! Amen!" on the back of his card.
