***SPOILERS***
Brilliant. Heath Ledger IS the Joker, plain and simple. Aaron Eckhart IS Dent/Two-Face. Christian Bale... he's a pretty decent Batman(though I do admit Kevin Conroy will always be my Batman). That said, let's begin.
This is easily the best movie I've ever seen(multiple times at that). While long it moves at a pace that works for it making the time pass easily. Though the Joker scenes were always the best. The magic pencil trick = ace. The changing his 'origin story' for each person he meets = dead on. The hospital? So many good lines, not to mention the 'smexy' nurse's uniform. Lol. Though I do have to be a little sad near the end when he's telling Batman how they'll go on forever chasing one another. It's enough to make you hate Heath for ODing. For giving us the greatest Joker to ever grace the screen, and then leave it as a solo performance.
Though enough of the low points. I hear a lot of people saying they feel that Two-Face was rushed. I actually don't think it was. This is a man in the most stressful position you could be with the Joker running loose and the public demanding Batman yet he's expected to stay calm. The beginning of the film he's already on the path whether or not you know it. A pure man doesn't kidnap someone in need of medical attention and play with their mind, pretending he's going to kill them based on the flip of a coin. A pure man can't be DA of Gotham. Take that line of thought and kill the person he's in love with, having him, as he says, 'lying to her. telling her it's alright'. Who wouldn't snap? And yes, I do realise that Rachel was essentially 'fridged' though I disliked her enough and saw it coming early enough that I didn't much care.
Ahem, back on Two-Face though... I love how the Joker was put in this origin. Not just as the outside antagonist who's making his life hell but also as the person who takes what's left of him and warps him. Actually going into the hospital and changing him just by talking it out. This Joker essentially created Two-Face as much as the mafia, the death of Rachel, everything. He took the White Knight of Gotham and turned him into something dark. He killed the soul of Gotham, albeit covering up what Two-Face did sort of put a halt on that though I think that making Batman into a villain like that will have it's own reprecussions. Batman was a hero to some of Gotham and now he's some murderous lowlife. You have that, and the death of Harvey, and Gotham, regardless of the good done, is going to suffer.
Now about the 'hints' that seemed to come up for the next movie. So far I think there's two main hints towards possible future villains. While personally I don't think Two-Face is really dead, as it would be a poor play to kill off such a major rogue in the same movie you meet him (and that would make Batman a real murderer which is a HUGE 'no-no'), I'm not sure about the next one. The hints I got were 'it should hold up to cats' meaning Catwoman and the weasely guy who figured out Bruce Wayne = Batman. What about him? His name. Mr. Reese. Could sound like... mysteries. Riddler. Though that's just a small theory, my money's more on Catwoman since it would fit well with the 'line between good and evil' theme and with Batman being on the run from the law. Yet in order to get Batman back on good terms you'd have to have a villain big enough and destructive enough for him to stop that people will overlook it. Now whether or not Nolan wants to go in such a direction as that, is yet to be seen.
All in all it's a fantastic film and I can't wait to see it in IMAX later this week.
Rating: 42 out of 10
ETA: Oh yeah, now liking that Montoya wasn't apart of this/Gotham Knight. If she was she'd be the cop who betrayed Dent/the force by turning Rachel over, definately something no one wants and way out of character.
