Sleep frustrates me. I mean, I honestly get a little annoyed that I need it in order for my body to function properly. The average amount of sleep someone needs is 6-8 hours. For the sake of things let's say 7. 7 hours every 24 hours. 49 every week. 2555 a year. 53655 by the time you're 21. That's 2235.6 days or 6 out of 21 years of your life(not counting leap years here) that you're asleep and that's not even including the excess slumber of your baby years. Think of all you can do in 6 years and you spent it asleep.

Don't get me wrong, I love dreaming. I love that comforting stillness of the mind. I love the restoration. Yet, I hate that I struggle to wake once I've drifted off. I hate when I have a list of things to do and all my eyelids can do is droop. I hate the things I miss out on when asleep that I have to catch up on later. I hate that after a certain amount of time awake I become a danger to myself, and sometimes those around me, in loosing the ability to make proper choices(can't stay awake? don't drive. that railing you normally jump over instead of walking the rest of the way down the steps? no longer a good idea. that x-acto knife? sharp.).

I once stayed awake for 5 days straight. I got a lot done but I also saw a fair amount of things that weren't really there. I have a tricky relationship with sleep.

I am in total agreement with you here! I always feel like if I'm sleeping I'm wasting precious time. On weekends, I usually only sleep an average of 2.5 to 4 hours a day if I sleep Friday at all. I work nights, and I can never fall asleep as soon as I get home from work. So, on Fridays 8 times out of ten I just stay awake and go out and about running errands and maybe take a nap in the afternoon and if not just stay awake until Saturday morning sleep a couple hours and go back for round two of the weekend! XD

That seems to be a bit like me on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. I tend not to sleep those nights, especially Tuesdays, and just catch up somewhere else(normally Thursdays, I have a bad habit of using Thursdays as my day to sleep).

It gets draining after awhile and I can't think straight speaking of sleep...

I, for one, am a huge fan of sleep. I miss a lot of sleep during the week, so I often sleep 12-14 hours each night on the weekends. But it's true, when you wake up at 2:00 in the afternoon, that the wasted potential of that time really hits home.

I once had a friend who stayed up for five days straight. He ended up writing a 3-page email to my best friend/roommate confessing his love for her... despite knowing she had no interest in him romantically. Despite having just forcefully coached her into breaking up with her boyfriend (definitely a plus, but still, rather self-serving). They didn't speak for years. Very awkward.

Yikes. Glad the only rather off thing I do when I hit a certain point without sleep is get in stupid online arguments. I swear if I ever get featured on sf_d it's going to be because I didn't just back away from the keyboard and go to bed.

I'll sleep when I'm dead...

I wish, anyway.

I agree it's a complete waste of time. But if I don't get a sleep on a regular schedule, I have sleep paralysis and hallucinations from asthma.

My roommate once mentioned that people actually have a hormone that's supposed to make the stress of waking up easier as long as the whole waking up thing is something your body is naturally doing and not because of some alarm clock or bang on a door.

I had a professor mention that humans were the only beings that slept for that long without a break. He discussed a study done by some college kids in which they slept for a bit, then woke up and did something light, (reading, doodling...)followed by going back to sleep for the rest of the evening. Supposedly, they were more awake and refreshed in the morning, plus had a moment of semi-productivity during the evening.

And as a final afterthought, I think Einstein said he slept for like twelve-fifteen hours, because his brain needed that crazy amount of rest to do amazing stuff. Ew...
